INTENT – Our Music Curriculum

At St Peter's Eaton Square, we believe that music is for everyone. Our music curriculum inspires children to become confident performers, thoughtful listeners and creative musicians, developing a lifelong appreciation of music through a wide range of musical styles, genres, traditions and historical periods.

Our curriculum is fully inclusive and accessible to all pupils. Through listening, singing, playing, improvising, composing and music technology, every child is given the opportunity to succeed regardless of prior musical experience. Music provides a powerful means of self-expression, collaboration and communication, helping children develop confidence, resilience and creativity.

Our curriculum is built around the Charanga Creative Music scheme, which provides a carefully sequenced spiral curriculum from Early Years to Year 6. Musical knowledge and skills are revisited and developed over time, enabling pupils to build increasing confidence and independence as musicians. Singing is at the heart of our provision and is enriched through specialist teaching, practical music-making, music technology and regular opportunities to perform. By the time pupils leave St Peter's, they will have developed the musical knowledge, technical skills and confidence to participate successfully in a wide range of musical experiences.

IMPLEMENTATION – How We Deliver Our Music Curriculum

Our curriculum follows the Charanga Creative Music scheme, ensuring clear progression in focused listening, musical elements, notation, singing, instrumental performance, improvisation, composition, music technology and performance. Learning is carefully sequenced so that musical knowledge and skills are continually revisited and deepened through a spiral curriculum, supporting long-term musical development.

Singing forms the foundation of our music curriculum. Weekly Key Stage singing assemblies, led by a specialist singing teacher from Pimlico Music Foundation, develop vocal technique, musicality and ensemble skills. In addition, Year 5 pupils benefit from enhanced vocal provision throughout the year, further developing part singing, musical leadership and performance confidence.

Alongside singing, pupils develop practical musical skills through singing, tuned and untuned instruments and music technology. Throughout the curriculum, they learn to listen critically, perform individually and as part of an ensemble, improvise, compose, record and evaluate their own musical ideas. As pupils progress through school, they become increasingly confident in reading notation, understanding musical elements and applying these skills creatively across a range of musical contexts.

Regular performances in assemblies, church services, concerts and community events provide meaningful opportunities for pupils to apply their learning, perform with confidence and contribute to the musical life of the school.

IMPACT – How We Evaluate Our Music Curriculum

Children leave St Peter's as confident, enthusiastic and reflective musicians who enjoy participating in music both individually and as part of an ensemble. They demonstrate secure progression in listening, singing, performing, improvising, composing and understanding musical notation, while developing fluency in pulse, rhythm, pitch and the wider musical elements.

Assessment is ongoing and informs teaching through practical performance, observation, discussion, composition and self-evaluation. As pupils progress through school, they demonstrate increasing independence, creativity and technical control, applying their musical knowledge confidently across a range of musical contexts.

The impact of our curriculum is evident through high-quality classroom music-making, confident singing, successful performances and enthusiastic participation in musical opportunities across the school community. Above all, pupils leave St Peter's with the confidence, skills and appreciation to continue engaging with music beyond primary school and throughout their lives.
